Defining and Categorizing Weblogs
"Well-behaved women seldom make history." --Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
misbehaving.net is a weblog about women and technology. It's a celebration of women's contributions to computing; a place to spotlight women's contributions as well point out new opportunities and challenges for women in the computing field.

SUPERVISION
I've finished and submitted my thesis. A surreal feeling to have finished the blogging study. I've even popped in to see how Maia and her Shabby Charm blog is getting along. But I'm rather fed up with the shabby and chic. Not my kind of style....

SUPERVISION 28.04.2010
One hour of constructive supervision. AM har read through first draft and made remarks. De Saussure and Peirce are dispensable, but I cling to them still. I need something else instead and right now deleting one and a half page is not an option. However, things can change (and hopefully they will). The blog as medium in a metaperspective is relevant in the conclusion. The study of Baumer et al. concerning the role of the reader will be elaborated. Good suggestions from AM. I'll hand in a second draft approx. 10th of May.

SEMINAR AT UiS
Went to the seminar on Friday. Interesting, but I missed a list of participants and a clearer statement of the aim and scope of the seminar. It was just like any other lecture at the UiS....someone's talking and someone's listening politely, the bravest and most talkative throwing in some questions (not necessarily relevant ones) now and then. Most had brought their laptops and twittered frenticly - about their presence at the seminar to the world of twitters "out there". Which is rather telling.

SUPERVISION April 7th
Went through chapter 2 again. Better this time. Should not bring in more aspects in the thesis now, suggests AM. Still, I will bring in a few more in the discussion. Perhaps (to add some life in the thesis) compare the 'main' blog with a totally different blog. The bloggers in my study are very polite and streamlined. Although the date for submission is not very far away, I'll do my best and hope sending AM a complete thesis on April 19 or 20.

THE ROLE OF THE BLOG READER
Abstract:
'Within the last decade, blogs have become an important
element of popular culture, mass media, and the daily lives
of countless Internet users. Despite the medium’s
interactive nature, most research on blogs focuses on either
the blog itself or the blogger, rarely if at all focusing on the
reader’s impact. In order to gain a better understanding of
the social practice of blogging, we must take into account
the role, contributions, and significance of the reader. This
paper presents the findings of a qualitative study of blog
readers, including common blog reading practices, some of
the dimensions along which reading practices vary,
relationships between identity presentation and perception,
the interpretation of temporality, and the ways in which
readers feel that they are a part of the blogs they read. It
also describes similarities to, and discrepancies with,
previous work, and suggests a number of directions'

Supervision Thursday March 4.
Went through chapter 2. A lot to take note of!!!! AM suggests a theory much more related to the research question. According to her, the theory must reflect what I'm aiming to find out in my study. Also, I need to bring in the Model Reader, thta is, the addressees. My feeling here is that this is absolutely interesting and I see why I should bring it in. Nevertheless, the Theory of Umberto Eco and the book The Role of the Reader is not easily accessible, but I'll give it a go....
This time, one hour of supervision was not enough. I'll ask for a supervision as soon as I've finished chapter 3.

THIS BLOG
...is most of all a place where I gather and display films, interesting hyperlinks or short narratives. Nothing more and nothing less.

WHAT IS BRICOLAGE?
'Bricolage is a word which is used to mean an assemblage of objects, along with the trial and error process of putting such objects together. Someone who practices bricolage is known as a bricoleur. Bricolage plays an important role in a number of fields, from computer programming to music, and it is part of the artistic and cultural expression of many cultures around the world. You may have even engaged in a bit of bricolage yourself; perhaps, for example, you rigged up a simple solution to a household problem, using materials which were to hand. This is a form of bricolage' http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-bricolage.htm.
